Eh?
Twice in the past week, while in uniform and on duty, I've had the twenty dollar bills I handed to the cashier checked with a money pen to validate their legitimacy.
The first, when I was picking up a bagel for breakfast. I watched the three customers in front of me pay with twenty dollar bills, get their change and breakfast, and leave. When it came my turn, the girl breaks out the little pen and marks the bill. She looks at me and says, "Don't feel bad, we have to do that for all 20s." That's funny, you took the last 3 twenties without blinking an eye. Suddenly mine is suspicious?
Two days later, the same thing, only a different store. This time I was getting a hamburger for lunch. Still in uniform, still on duty. Person after person, paying without issue. Suddenly, my money looks fake. I've gotten burgers from this place in civilian clothes and have NEVER seen any one's money checked. In fact, the kid had to dig through a drawer to find the damn pen. But I'm a suspect.
What the hell is going on? Why would I jeopardize my life and career for a hamburger or bagel? And why is a uniformed police officer's money more suspicious than your average Joe?

In this case, maybe look at it a different way. Maybe they think their boss hired you to check them to see if they are doing their job. So they use the pen to show you they're following the rules.
Kind of like speeders, they always slow down when they see a cop car, right?
I wouldn't take it personally. I've had my uniform on and had clerks check my ID when I use my credit card. Go figure. :)
Fresh from the ATM? Otherwise, not a clue...
I wouldn't sweat it too much. Odds are that they are supposed to check everyone and your presence reminds/scares them into following their store policy.
I have "See ID" written on the back of my credit card and the ONLY time anyone ever asks to see my ID is when I am in uniform. Maybe they think they are going to get in trouble of they don't compare the signature when they see a cop. I suspect it is the same with your experiences with the $20 bill.
Moe:
Anon might be onto something with the "checking"...makes sense.
Wanna have some REAL fun..hand them a Jefferson $2 bill!
Hell, everytime I get a new "version" of whatever bill is being spit out the ATM or being handed over to me as change (I can believe in ???), I check the dang thing...
(then again, I used to work for the Treasury Dept)
Old habits truly die hard.
:)
I wouldn't swerat it...
Stay safe out there.
Ditto what hat Johnny said. Also, on a side note, make sure the cook isn't on parole. I recently got food poisoning after eating at my favorite diner while in uniform. I was out of commission for a week and lost about 15 pounds.
Dear Moe,
I'm with Johnny and Spark Check. People tune out their lives until a uniform shows up.
As to Johnny Law and the "check I.D." hey! Cops aren't the only ones who deal with a crap-talking public. Unfailingly people forget they've written that on the back and get insulted when you ask for I.D. Go figure!
