Looking for volunteers
I was taught from a young age that you never volunteer for anything. Just one of the perks of being an Army brat.
The department is asking for volunteers to join response groups in Haiti. The kicker is, you have to go unarmed. So let's get this straight - you're looking for first responders to try to help put back this third world nation in order when it's whole government basically collapsed while groups of machete-wielding men are looting and stealing aid and you'd like it done with nothing but a smile, first aid kit and a box of MREs?
No boss, I don't know why no one will volunteer.

Dear Moe,
That's absolutely insane. Of course you need your weapons down there. THe fact that you're trained in security is totally the point of having you go.
That is no kindergarten down there, and I expect it's going to get worse in the next 24. It's incipient anarchy. I don't blame the people of Haiti in particular for that, but it's still a fact of conditions.

I went to Haiti several times during my military stint. The way it looks now is the same way it looked 25 years ago.

Unarmed?
Where street gangs are wielding MACHETES?
I...don't...think...so.
Had a FWPD sgt. buddy that went down to NOLA post-Katrina...and he had HIS M4 slung right where it should be.
(but Haiti is foreign soil)
And OUR people STILL need to feel protected.
'Nuff said.
I wouldn't go unarmed. I wouldn't expect anyone else too, either.
What angers me about the situation in Haiti is that the original state of Haiti is carefully not being mentioned anywhere. While Haiti isn't a DMZ, it sure isn't Disney.
I'm glad you said no. Things are only going to get worse there, and to be without the safety of a firearm is just insane.
You've got enough to deal with at work. Let your boss volunteer and become a human target and maybe then the dept. will understand why everyone isn't in a hurry to get to Haiti.
Please take care and be safe.
Hey Boss! So you're going to go down there while I get dumped to foot post for not joining you? Why don't you save on airfare and just drive down there.
Now I'm one spot higher on the seniority list!!!
It's a SNAFU. Nobody with any common sense should go. It would be resented at the same time they had their hands out asking for help. The response to the troops already has been dismal in some places.
I know your site focuses on other things and that this wouldn't be a normal thing for your blog - but would you consider a TV review? i'd love to send you a screener - agianni@youcastcorp.com
